The Otter Wise Foundation
The Otter Wise Foundation is Otter Wise Talent Solutions', not-for-profit entity, focused on training and skills development for Indigenous people across Canada. The Foundation's mandate is designed to create meaningful opportunities for skills enhancement and credentialing through partnerships with forward-thinking employers.
Rooted in Resilience, Committed to Change
The Otter Wise Foundation is more than a skills development initiative—it is a commitment to honoring the strength, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous communities while actively creating pathways for economic empowerment. Inspired by the life and service of Samuel Everette Hearns, a proud Alderville First Nation member, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Veteran, the foundation embodies his legacy of perseverance, healing, and service to others.
Empowering Indigenous Communities Through Skills Development
The Otter Wise Foundation provides Indigenous individuals with in-demand skills and certifications, bridging the gap between workforce needs and Indigenous talent. Through employer-driven training programs, we ensure participants receive the tools they need for meaningful, long-term career success. The foundation’s work supports economic reconciliation by creating direct employment pathways while fostering cultural strength and community connection.
A Legacy of Strength and Service
Samuel Everette Hearns dedicated 28 years to the Canadian military, and retired as a decorated Corporal in the First Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment. Beyond his military career, he returned to his Anishinaabe roots, serving as a Head Veteran at Pow Wows, an Eagle Staff and pipe carrier, and a firekeeper. He spent his later years mentoring others, sharing his teachings in communities, and correctional institutions, and as a visiting Elder at Conestoga College.
His legacy serves as a powerful reminder that despite the historical and ongoing struggles Indigenous peoples face, resilience and empowerment can pave the way forward.
The Otter Wise Foundation carries this spirit by providing opportunities for Indigenous individuals to reclaim economic independence, achieve career success, and strengthen their communities.
How It Works
- Employers collaborate with Otter Wise to develop targeted skills training based on industry needs. For example, a company in camp services may sponsor culinary arts training, ensuring Indigenous participants gain meaningful employment in their field.
- Employers play an active role in funding training programs by covering costs for instructors, materials, certifications, and on-the-job learning experiences.
- Participants earn industry-recognized credentials in partnership with credentialing entities, making them competitive in the job market while ensuring their skills are valued.
- Graduate Participants connect directly with hiring employers, and the foundation provides ongoing post-placement support to encourage retention and career growth.
- Programs are accessible in both urban and rural Indigenous communities, with remote learning options to ensure inclusivity and flexibility.
- The initiative leverages government resources to make training affordable and scalable for both participants and employers.
